Ten films in which Magnus Magnusson explores the Viking world. 5 : England at Bay
' All they wanted was a nice warm welcome and a few beers in Weymouth, but they were insulted, so fists began to fly.'
That is Magnus Magnusson 's slightly tongue-in-cheek interpretation of events on the Dorset coast around AD 790, when England's first recorded Viking visitors arrived unannounced and slew the king's representative for daring to ask them their business!
Today's episode of Vikings! looks at the Viking kingdom of York, and at the beleaguered kingdom of Wessex where it was left to a young Saxon king to stem the onslaught of the ' Viking host'-Alfred the Great. with DENNIS EDWARDS

The architect of Kingstone Lisle broke all the rules to produce a most magnificent hall with a flying staircase and classical figures, yet still managed to retain an intimate atmosphere.

In this unique setting Arthur Negus shares his love of furniture, silver and glass with his friend and colleague, Robin Butler. Still very much a home, Kingstone Lisle contains beautiful 17th- and 18th-century cut glass, as well as a collection of miniature furniture and one or two surprises!
