A series of seven programmes which examines air travel.
Presented by Julian Pettifer 3: Opening the Routes
This programme tells the story from the very beginning in 1919, when airline pilots followed the railway lines and expected to make forced landings. But hazardous journeys in wood and fabric bi-planes developed into the comfort and reliability of the Empire flying-boats. In America, the world's first air hostesses served prohibition brandy in the fruit cocktails and the search for new passengers led to exclusive service on the ground and in the air.

William Robertson Davies
The Melancholy of Romance
William Robertson Davies , arguably Canada's most distinguished novelist, goes back to the provincial city of Kingston at the mouth of the St Lawrence Seaway, where he grew up. It was the setting for his best-known trilogy, The Salter-ton Novels, a sardonic view of university life in the 1950s, with the characters still to be seen on the streets of Kingston.
There are people who say that the citizens of Kingston are eccentrics. They are not eccentrics -they are merely people who follow their own star. And for a writer, that is an absolute gift.'

Formula One World Championship German Grand Prix
ALAIN PROST scorched to a Renault victory in the heat of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone three weeks ago-the first Frenchman ever to win the race. Now clear leader in the World Championship and odds-on for the 1983 title, Prost must start favourite for today's race at Hockenheim.
A year ago Didier Pironi suffered appalling injuries in a crash in practice and Piquet and Salazar provided the additional spectacle of a well-publicised fist fight during the race itself. Commentators
