Syon House
Hannah Gordon is Arthur Negus s guest in the second programme of six in which he visits houses that he especially enjoys with a companion who shares his affection for the fine country houses of this country and the treasures they contain.
The interior of Syon House is a tribute to the talent of Robert Adam as both designer and architect. The magnificence and theatrical panache of some of his schemes contrasts with the cool restraint of others.

Charles Darrow got his inspiration for the game Monopoly from Atlantic City in America.
Jubbulpore in India was the setting for Sir Neville Chamberlain to invent snooker. And the cross-word first came from the pen of the Willing, Young, Natural, Nice and Educated man, Arthur WYNNE. But when were these games invented? Your guess - 1913, 1929, 1875?

Miners. Hard men, close-knit, independent, aristocrats in the industrial pay league, and union men from cradle to grave. And yet the tastes and habits, attitudes and aspirations in Britain's coalfields have undergone subtle changes. This portrait of today's miner, at work and at leisure, is set in one of the enclosed communities that huddle around Barnsley in South Yorkshire.

Even here, in the heart of Arthur Scargill country, there was a marked dwindling of enthusiasm for strike action when the votes were counted earlier this month. So the industrial peace that broke out in the coalfields eight years ago remains intact, despite the annual flexing of muscles.
