A calendar of French life in 12 film portraits
The countryside of the Lot Valley, south east of the Dordogne, is beautiful, but the land is very poor. Robert Cagnac is a small-holder, with 72 sheep and seven acres on which he grows maize and tobacco for snuff. He met his wife at a local dance-it was love at first sight. They have three children, but none of them wants to be a farmer. Cagnac's old uncle Tonton has been taken in as extra help, and the three adults run the farm - the last generation of the family to do so. They hardly make enough money to live on, so they've converted one room into a restaurant.
In the late spring the Cagnacs spend their time planting and sheep rearing-but there's also an unusual breakfast at the sheep market, an expedition to buy wine from a pump, and a lunch party which gets out of hand ... Narrator MICHAEL DEAN
