A series of nine films
5: ' It's like a prison: they work by bells '
Andy Sinclair is a habitual truant, a constant smoker, an occasional glue sniffer and a fifth-form folk hero. He sees little point in being at a school he does not enjoy, less point in adhering to values he does not share and no point at all in taking exams he will not pass. The school must try to contain this problem. The family must try to live with it. As Andy all too slowly approaches school-leaving age, paternalistic authority and disenchanted adolescence come face to face.

with Elkie Brooks
John Osborne once said: asking a working writer what he feels about critics is like asking a lamppost what it feels about dogs. Tonight Frank Delaney asks three well-known critics to defend their role and to discuss the function of criticism in the arts. His guests: Bernard Levin, whose opinions are once again being enjoyed by readers of The Times, has in the past turned a discerning eye on such varied subjects as the theatre. politics, music, fiction and food; Christopher Ricks, Professor of English at Cambridge and Editor of The State of the Language; and Marina Vaizey, currently Art Critic of the Sunday Times.
With music from ELKIE BROOKS , singing her new single.

Big game-hunter Robert Rainsford is shipwrecked on an uncharted island and finds himself the guest of the effusive but enigmatic Count Zaroff, also a devotee of the chase.
