Bernard Levin talks to the philosopher Sir Isaiah Berlin who has been described as ' one of the diamond mines of our generation '. Berlin abandoned pure philosophy after the last war in favour of the history of ideas, on the grounds that he preferred ' a field in which one could hope to know more at the end of one's life than when one had begun'.

Mr Moonlight
They wanted to make him the next Sinatra. They flew him to America to co-star with Marilyn Monroe. In only two years Frankic Vaughan was back. But the Britain he'd conquered in the 50s was now the Britain of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Yet his hard-core fans stayed faithful. Frankie survived and, 20 years on, is the elder statesman of pop. This is a profile of Frankie and his wife Stella: of the crises in their lives, and their day-to-day existence that moves between a comfortable North London home, to fan clubs in the Midlands and to the boys' clubs to which his commitment is close and constant. Finally there is the stage, where his star burns as brightly as ever as he croons his repertoire of evergreens. ' Give him the moonlight, give him the girl, and leave the rest ... to him.
