A series of five films about Play 1: Plays of Meaning
As children we play around, make up stories, tell jokes. As adults we are told to put away childish things. But is play unimportant or one of the main things that makes life worth living? If play is about being frivolous why do we take our games so seriously? If play is about feeling free where do the rules come in? We play with words, with pictures, with sounds with ideas. Is play a key to the way we learn about the world and communicate with each other? Is play a primary source of art and culture, not just its trivial leftover?
This first film looks at some of the plays of meaning surrounding the phenomenon itself, paradoxes contained in it, attitudes towards it, theories about it, ways of explaining it, how indeed to begin making a film about it ...
With Brian Sutton-Smith , who began his play life in New Zealand and now teaches, writes and talks about the subject in Philadelphia.
