Land of the Mountain and the Flood
Tucked in a corner of Australia is a diverse world of alpine snowscape, giant forests and winding rivers that feed the largest inland lake system in the continent. Known as Gippsland, it is a region that thrives on water thawing from mountain snows bringing life to the plains, swamps and forests below.
This film explores the web of landscapes - home of laughing kookaburras, feather-tail gliders, sea eagles, and such oddities as peripatus - seemingly part-worm, part insect. There are spiders that ingeniously avoid the floods and a pygmy possum, once thought extinct, that is alive and well in a mountain ski lodge.
The exploration reveals a land not only wealthy in wildlife, but rich in coal and timber, too - a land changing fast as we exploit that wealth. Narrated by BARRY PAINE

Len Ward : the Rest of the Story
From early childhood Len Ward worked on the bleak Pennine farm where his family had been tenants for nearly 200 years. He worked up to 16 hours a day and the only holiday he ever had was a visit to hospital. Through the years his neighbours gave up and went away. Len persisted. By his early 50s he had bought the place and built up a good herd of cows and a flock of sheep. ' I'm prospering,' he said, ' and I'd not like to retire for a good while yet.'
Those years, recounted in this series in 1978, are recalled at the beginning of the present film.
Afterwards came the worst winter in living memory. ' It killed the blackbirds, it killed the robins and it nearly killed me.'
The rest of the story is about the months that followed, of the struggle between desire to stay and an instinct to get out before another winter. It is about what happened to Len Ward in the end. Narrator DERYCK GUYLER
