The last of four programmes Nodrup's Monastery
Presented by Michel Peissel
Karsha, in the Kingdom of Zanskar, is one of the last of the great Tibetan monasteries. The monks live by rules laid down by their founder, the Buddha, more than 2,500 years ago. Like medieval Europe, nearly a quarter of Zanskar's population are monks. They are the second sons of an agricultural community that is rich enough to keep them in the monasteries, but too poor to allow them to stay at home, marry, and multiply. The monasteries may seem an economic luxury, but this is Zanskar's equivalent of Cape Canaveral, and the monks are engaged in the psychic equivalent of a moonshot.

Gala Evening at the Kirov Ballet Raymonda
BBC2's Dance Month 1980, ends with a performance by one of the greatest Russian companies, the Kirov from Leningrad.
Raymonda, choreographed by MARIUS PETIPA to music by ALEXANDER GLAZUNOV , is a magnificent example of the classical ballet of the 19th century, danced tonight in the beautiful theatre that saw its first performance in 1898. Set in medieval Provence it tells the story of the wooing of Raymonda by the Crusader knight, Jean de Brienne , and his evil rival the Saracen Abderahman.

A special edition on China
' The people of China are working with one heart and one voice under the leadership of Chairman Hua to achieve the four modernisations of our country.'
(A CHINESE FACTORY WORKER)
By the year 2,000, Chinese leaders intend that agriculture, industry, science and defence will be modernised so that China is an industrial nation. The average income per head will increase from
150 dollars a year to 1,000 dollars in 20 years. But what problems will such rapid modernisation bring? How much will they have to compromise Chinese communism and accept capitalist ways?
Paul Barry has visited Chinese factories and talked with factory managers and workers, and with Vice-Premier Kang Shi'en to assess China's new Great Leap Forward.

In an attempt to recover from a mental breakdown, Lou Sand retires to a secluded beach house. Her companion is a friend who intends to make a film about her life. Lou tells of her love affairs and faded romances. And of her formerly successful career as a fashion model. Gradually, fact and fantasy mix and Aaron, her would-be biographer, realises that it is too late to unravel the fragmented life of the glamorous and seriously disturbed woman.
