A special edition on China
' The people of China are working with one heart and one voice under the leadership of Chairman Hua to achieve the four modernisations of our country.'
(A CHINESE FACTORY WORKER)
By the year 2,000, Chinese leaders intend that agriculture, industry, science and defence will be modernised so that China is an industrial nation. The average income per head will increase from
150 dollars a year to 1,000 dollars in 20 years. But what problems will such rapid modernisation bring? How much will they have to compromise Chinese communism and accept capitalist ways?
Paul Barry has visited Chinese factories and talked with factory managers and workers, and with Vice-Premier Kang Shi'en to assess China's new Great Leap Forward.
