starring Margaret Rutherford
Robert Morley and Kay Kendall
The Drossmouth repertory company are busy rehearsing next week's play under the direction of their erratic producer, Harry Black , when the arrival of the author plunges them into even greater difficulties than usual. Quite apart from anything else, the aristocratic-sounding Jeremy St Clair turns out to be an elderly spinster with her own ideas about how her play should be produced.

At least £450-million a year goes unclaimed in welfare benefits. One reason for this is that many people don't know where to turn for advice about their rights. Independently-run information and advice centres can provide valuable help but, like so many other services, their centres too are struggling for survival. We hear also about some self-help for musicians - DIY record production. A band called Scritti Politti show us how to go about it.

Stephenson's Rocket
When ROBERT STEPHENSON 'S famous steam engine Rocket won the Rainhill Trials in October 1829, that event proved to be the starting point for the development of the railway system we know today. But the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, who staged the trials, were not at all convinced that these new-fangled machines were the right answer. And Rocket's win was by no means a foregone conclusion - it had worthy competition, not least from TIMOTHY HACKWORTH 'S Sans Pareil.
In this revised version of the programme to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Rainhill Trials, the north east of England went back into the locomotive building business to construct full-sized working replicas of Rocket, Sans Pareil and the third engine, Novelty. Curiously, the old rivalries reasserted themselves.
Anthony Burton follows the construction of the replicas and tells the story of the strenuous efforts made by the pioneers to perfect a machine that, as history knows, lasted the world for a century and a half - the steam locomotive.

A personal view of the suburbs by Michael Frayn
Millions of people live in them. Few people ever look at them. The suburbs, hundreds of square miles fringing our big cities, are the butt of jokes and the settings for situation comedies. But, in their way, the suburbs are an astonishing piece of folk art, as extraordinary as Stonehenge or the great cathedrals.
Following his successful films on Berlin and Vienna, MICHAEL FRAYN , playwright, novelist and journalist, turns his attention to the sprawling acres of suburban London, where he grew up.
Delightful ... (EVENING STANDARD) A wonderfully evocative film.
(SUNDAY TELEGRAPH')
An enchanting programme (DAILY MAIL) A lovely eye-opening film.

Vote, Vote, Vote for Nigel Barton; Son of Man; Pennies from Heaven; Brimstone and Treacle; Blue Remembered Hills.
These titles are just some of the landmarks in the career of Bernard Levin 's guest in the fourth of this series of eight conversations.
Dennis Potter is widely considered the most distinctive playwright yet to have emerged from television. Frequently his work has expressed a sense of moral and philosophical anguish. Lately he has been moving towards 'a new and, for me, startling but exhilarating trust in the order of things'.
In a new departure, he has formed his own television production company and has involved himself in independent local radio.

Starring Bruno S, Eva Mattes, Clemens Scheitz.
Werner Herzog's most recent film starring his natural acting 'discovery' Bruno S, is almost the story of Bruno's own life, set against the bleak plains of Wisconsin.
A man is released from Berlin prison. His effects are returned to him and the governor gives him a lecture on the evils of drink. Once in the street, Bruno makes straight for his favourite bar. There he sees Eva, a prostitute, roughly treated by a group of pimps. Impulsively, Bruno offers Eva the shelter of his flat, an offer which is to have momentous consequences for them both.
