Late last year, The British Art
Show, the largest exhibition of contemporary British art ever held, opened in Sheffield. It moved on to Newcastle and now it's at Bristol.
It was put together for the Arts Council by critic William Packer who was asked to make a choice of what he thought the best and most representative work in the country. He was filmed as he made his selection and went to meet seven of the artists finally chosen. But for whom is such an exhibition designed? How did The British Art Show look to the two steel workers Packer showed around his choice? Much is revealed about the problems that confront artists, art critics and the general public, for many of whom modern art is indeed Another Country.
