When a girl marries an oilman she marries his job, goes where he goes. She lives between the phonecalls which have her packing her bags and heading for
Australia or Anchorage Aberdeen or Abu Dhabi. It sounds like fun -and can be, well-paid fun. But, when her husband leaves for the oilfield or the off-shore rig she must cope alone with the local lifestyle: the culture may be strange, the language foreign, local laws may prevent her taking a job, the children may be at boarding school half a world away. She will soon learn the meaning of ' cabin fever , which can be just as destructive in the sticky heat of the Gulf as in the freezing darkness of an Alaskan or a Shetland winter.
