Behind the Scenes
This weekend at Rainhill, on the line from Liverpool to Manchester, a spectacular three-day railway pageant will celebrate 150 years of inter-city travel, and the triumph of Stephenson's Rocket at the Rainhill Locomotive Trials of 1829. In this programme, recorded on the eve of the first day, Brian Redhead goes behind the scenes to see final preparations being made to replicas of Rocket, Novelty and Sans Pareil, and over 30 historic steam locomotives and their trains, and to meet some of the people closely involved in this unique event.
David Jenkinson of the National Railway Museum - a major contributor of exhibits - takes us inside some magnificently-restored coaches.

"Make just a ripple, Come on, be brave, This time a ripple, Next time a wave!"
- runs the lyric of 'Everybody says don't', a song by a lyricist and composer who has never lacked the courage to make ripples - or waves for that matter - in the course of his adventurous career. From West Side Story in 1957 to Sweeney Todd opening in London this summer, Stephen Sondheim has lifted the Broadway musical clear of its saccharine conventions and endowed it with a fresh humour and intelligence.
Tonight, in the fifth of this series of eight conversations, he talks to Bernard Levin about the challenges and pitfalls of working in this uniquely American medium.

starring Edward G. Robinson Ida Lupino , John Garfield
When a ferry-boat is rammed by the mystery ship The Ghost, only two of its passengers are taken on board - Ruth, an escaped convict, and Humphrey van Weyden, a novelist. They join a crew terrorised by ' Wolf ' Larsen, the sadistic captain of the ship. Larsen's main victims are the new arrivals and the cabin boy, Leach. In a desperate attempt at survival, all three determine to escape the private version of ' hell ' that the tyrannical captain has created on board The Ghost. Edward G. Robinson gives one of his most remarkable performances as Larsen, the self-educated egotist whose obsessions and cruelty can only end in disaster.
