The Great
Railway Cavalcade
The Liverpool and Manchester Railway, the world's first inter-city railway, opened for business 150 years ago, just a year after Stephenson's Rocket had won the Rainhill Locomotive Trials which proved that steam engines could work a regular railway service.
This weekend replicas of Rocket, Novelty and Sans Pareil re-create those famous trials on the original stretch of track at Rainhill as part of a spectacular railway pageant which includes 30 preserved steam locomotives. Among them the famous Flying Scotsman, the racing Hardwicke of the 1880s, Lion of 1838, once the star of the film
The Titfield Thunderbolt and the recently-restored Duchess of Hamilton, some say the most beautiful engine ever built. Also on view are historic railway vehicles and the transport of tomorrow, the Advanced Passenger Train.
Brian Redhead and David Jenkinson of the National Railway Museum provide a layman's guide to this unique cavalcade representing a century and a half of Britain's railway history.

Tewkesbury, close to the junction of the Severn and Avon, grew up to serve the monastery. Built of the local Cotswold limestone, the Abbey Church still contains some of the most beautiful monuments of the English Middle Ages - ' the Westminster Abbey of the feudal baronage '. In contrast to the wealth of the monastery, the humbler dwellings of the towns-people were made of wood and plaster. One of the survivors is the House of the Nodding Gables - ' a faintly intoxicated-looking building with overhanging storeys making their obeisance to passersby ALEC CLIFTON-TAYLOR explains.

Diana, wife of Sir Oswald Mosley, lives in Paris, where Nancy spent the latter part of her life. Jessica, herself a distinguished author, now lives in California, a seasoned rebel and left-wing sympathiser. Finally, Deborah, the Duchess of Devonshire, puts in perspective the turbulent Mitford family.
There are contributions from their nephew, Jonathan Guinness, and Nancy's French admirer, 'The Colonel'.
