The Consultants
A film report by Trevor Philpott
The consultants, especially those In the London teaching hospitals. are the kings of the medical world. We want to believe they know all the answers, that they can perform miracles. Legends grow up around them, about their uncanny skill and their wealth.
This film is a profile of three of them: two work on the exciting frontiers of modern medicine, a heart surgeon and one of the country's leading kidney physicians. The third consultant is a geriatrician. His patients too have a right to the finest medical skill even though, outside the hospital, there may be no one left in the world who cares whether they live or die.

In this the second of the annual lectures in honour of Jacob Bronowski, who died in 1974, his close friend Philip Morrison, Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, takes up a question posed by Bronowski in his series The Ascent of Man, and the subject of a recent controversy in the field of socio-biology. Are human beings unique in their inventive ability to alter the environment?

Morrison compares us with the formidable termites who are shown, in extraordinary film, to be capable of constructing complex arches. Yet could these strange creatures make a telescope? In providing his answer, Morrison makes use of the 600-year-old clock of Wells Cathedral, a modern digital alarm, and a 3,000-year-old Chinese bronze. In these objects, Morrison suggests, we can find an important clue to our own destiny; that is whether man shares with all other creatures the strait-jacket of biological evolution, or whether, uniquely amongst all animals, his intelligence has set him free.
