When Wilde, Yeats, Shaw, and Masefield dominated the London literary scene, one of the most vivid and important figures in the art world was Charles Ricketts.
Ricketts knew them all, and his invitation ' come and grub with me' turned his home into a meeting place for a brilliant generation. Kenneth Clark and Cecil Lewis have both sat at Ricketts' table and tonight they speak with affection of the man's many talents. For Ricketts was a book engraver, designer, painter, critic, collector, sculptor and costume designer of considerable distinction.
For years he was largely forgotten, but today his talents are at last being discovered - and a belated plaque will be placed on his home later this year.
