Investigates, Discovers, Questions This week: Put Away
Walking home very early one Saturday morning a young man. was stopped by the police, placed under detention for a few hours, declared mentally ill, and then compulsorily held in the mental wing of a hospital for the rest of the weekend. But he was not mentally ill at all - as a psychiatrist confirmed on Monday. In another town an old man was besieged in his own flat by relatives who wanted him to go into a mental hospital. A consultant psychiatrist, other hospital staff, a social worker, a lawyer and his own house-keeper-to say nothing of the old man himself-all agree that he was mentally normal and of above-average alertness. Nevertheless his relatives succeeded in getting him put into a mental institution - compulsorily.
Jack Pizzey discovers that both these stories happened because some sections of the Mental Health Act are open to what critics see as dangerous abuse: they claim that almost anyone could find themselves ' put away '.
