Bronze Age Blast-Off
The oldest gold objects in the world have been found in a cemetery in Bulgaria. The oldest copper mine in the world, dug with antler picks and stone hammers, has been discovered in Yugoslavia. A vast prehistoric metal industry has turned up in the Austrian Alps. All this evidence of early European emergence from the Stone Age has suddenly reversed a long-held belief that all our technology came from the Near East. For this bustling, independent activity in metallurgy has been found to pre-date the ancient civilisations of Egypt, Sumer and Troy. Could it be that European supremacy in technology took off as long as 6,500 years ago?

'Let Us Now Praise Famous Men ': Alabama 40 Years On
At the height of the American depression in the summer of 1936, t writer JAMES AGEE and photographer WALKER EVANS travelled south to Alabama. There they lived with a family of poor-white farmers recording their daily lives in intimate detail. What finally emerged was an extraordinary and personal account of deprivation and poverty. The book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men has become a classic.
More than 40 years later Arena returned to Alabama, in the foot-steps of Agee and Evans, to trace the survivors of that original family.

In these programmes people are invited to give first-hand accounts of something that has real personal significance for them. 5: Don't Talk About That
Malachy Kinnerney was born illegitimate -no great shame today perhaps - but in Ireland 34 years ago a different matter, especially if you are told by a priest never to mention it. His life has been obsessed by trying to come to terms with his shame and guilt.
