The Story of Britain's Royal Builders and Collectors. Told by Huw Wheldon in a series of nine programmes
8: Victoria, Queen and Empress
Although Queen Victoria had withdrawn from public life immediately after the death of the Prince Consort, by the end of her reign she had won renewed popularity. SIR HUW WHELDON relates the factors in this change of popular feeling: the growth of communications - railways, post and photography; and the revelation of the Queen's life at Balmoral Castle through the published extracts of her journal. Also reflected is the growth of the Empire and national prestige; and above all, the Queen Empress's interest in India. it might be best not to hold your breath while waiting for the equal to Royal Heritage. 'This will be real eyeball battle,' says exiled Russian Grandmaster Viktor Korchnoi, of the first world title chess match since the confrontation between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky made the headlines in Iceland in 1972. This time the stakes are even higher and the battleground has shifted to the Philippines. More than £300,000 is at stake-pride too, as World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov (USSR) defends his title against the avenging crusader Korchnoi, who uses chess as a political and psychological weapon, not only against Karpov, but against all that he despises about the Soviet Union.
Author and journalist Paul Jennings talks to the leading players in this unfolding drama and narrates the story of the two 'Ks'.
