' What was lacking in the West was a film that showed the Chinese people in their daily life, at home, working, eating, laughing, thinking', says Joris Ivens, doyen of documentary film-makers. So in 1973, at the personal invitation of Chou en-Lai , he and his associate, Marceline Loridan , went to China to make just such a film.
.The result, after 18 months of shooting and another 18 months of editing, was 12 hours of unique material showing the Chinese as foreigners have never seen them, which was screened last year in cinemas round the world under the title How Yukong Moved the Mountains.
Tonight, JORIS ivens and MARCELINE LORIDAN, in conversation with LUDOVIC KENNEDY , introduce their personal selection from the film. Narrator PAUL VAUGHAN
