They put acid in his nose-drops, poisoned his food, machine-gunned his car. Assassins have been trying to kill Hussein ever since he became King of Jordan at 17.
He has survived war with Israel and fought a civil war with fellow Arabs who tried to take over his country. Part of his kingdom is still under enemy occupation and although he hopes for peace Hussein, even now, has to be ready for war. At 42, he is one of the best known yet most isolated figures in the Middle East. He has married three times and tragically lost his third wife in a helicopter crash in his jubilee year.
Yet, after 25 years on the throne, the King survives. In the film he is seen at his Palace in the capital Amman, in the desert with his Bedouin tribes, on army manoeuvres and relaxing at his Summer Palace on the Gulf of Aqaba.
Hussein, his staff and his people, from Sheikhs to Palestinian refugees, talk to Jack Pizzey for this personal profile of the Survivor King.
