Professor Carl Sagan is perhaps the world's greatest optimist for the existence of intelligent life elsewhere in the Universe. In this last lecture of the series, he explains what an immense and difficult task it is to find, and communicate with, alien intelligence; but what earth-shaking significance such contact would have for mankind. The search may be fruitless until well beyond the lifetimes of his young audience - but SAGAN urges the next generation not to abandon it.

For Better, For Worse ...
Britain joined the European Economic Community five years age. How well have we done? Two men give their views.
Sir Fred Catherwood , Chairman of the British Overseas Trade Board and a top industrialist, explains why he believes that the Common Market has been a boost to Britain and has strengthened our competitive position in the world.
Jimmy Reid , senior shop steward of Marathon shipbuilders, shows why he considers that five years in the EEC has done more harm than good. Both men reflect the views of farmers, housewives and company managers on how membership has affected us.

Living Machines
The locust's belly dance, the case of the jerry-built barnacle, and how butterflies blow smoke rings, are all discoveries of a new kind of science-natural engineering. Biologists and engineers are pooling their ideas to understand how nature's machines work.
What materials are plants and animals made from? Why are they the shapes they are? How do they move?
Nature has invented efficient air-conditioning systems, energy storage devices and corrugated aerofoils. It has even invented the wheel. Certain creatures have recently been found to have rotary bearings and tiny electric motors. Tonight's programme reveals nature's designs with the help of unique film taken by the scientists themselves.
