The Great Wine Revolution
In the past ten years more and more people all over the world have taken to drinking table wine. At the same time scientists are investigating the ultimate mysteries: what gives each type of wine its distinctive taste? Why does the bouquet improve as it lies in a bottle for years? Could the effects of ageing be hastened on? If their work is successful, could it lead to fine wines at supermarket prices?

Until 1939 it was a Covent Garden tradition to stage Die Fledermaus on New Year's Eve. In Vienna the tradition remained unbroken. Now after a period of 39 years, the Royal Opera House Trust and Girozentrale, Vienna, make it possible for the tradition to be resumed by sponsoring a new version of Strauss's sparkling operetta. Produced by LEOPOLD LINDTBERG
Designed by JULIA TREVELYAN OMAN Die Fledermaus is presented for The Lively Arts - In Performance by ROBERT TEAR and will be broadcast in stereo on Radio 3.
During the Intervals we go behind the scenes to meet some of the personalities in tonight's Gala premiere and out into the heart of London to catch something of the New Year's Eve spirit
