Jangadeiros
The Raft Fishermen of Brazil
Jangadas are the most primitive sailing vessels in the world. Fishermen living in small communities dotted along the beaches of north-eastern Brazil have been using them for 300 years.
The fishermen, called Jangadeiros, take the balsa wood rafts out over the reefs to fish the high seas for several days at a time. They sleep lashed to their rafts to keep from being washed overboard. When they return to land, their families greet them with festivals to the local saint.
But this pattern of life is changing. The Fishing Union is pressurising them to stop fishing for lobsters, their main cash crop. Without this money, the Jangadeiros will not even be able to afford to bring the balsa logs to their beaches to make their magnificent sailing rafts. This is the story of the last Jangadeiros.

From the BBC studios in Manchester, Brian Trueman takes a non-metropolitan look at topics and issues likely to affect our lives in 1977. Cartoonist Bill Tidy and reporter Felicity Goodey join him to explore a different subject each week in a variety of ways.
And the people themselves, an invited audience, will be adding their voices to the topic under discussion.
