Yesterday's match between France and Wales was being hailed as the Championship decider even though it was the opening match for France. Such is the strength of two esteemed sides. Certainly the French have remarkable all-round skills, but Wales will not readily give up their Championship title. A new-look England side spectacularly disposed of Scotland's aspirations at Twickenham and wished to show that they could maintain this impetus in Dublin.

Blackbird Backlash
The second of three programmes on Man's conflict with Nature.
As winter sets in, America's vast blackbird population converges on hundreds of multi-million bird roosts in the south-eastern states. Within weeks of their arrival, there is an increasing sense of foreboding as they swarm out each dawn to find food and the wrath of farmers waiting for them in the fields of winter crops.
Welcomed in spring, detested in winter, the 550 million, birds have become a threat to human health, a hazard to aircraft, a winged enemy of man -'fit only for extermination'! Yet, by his conversion of prairie and forests into farmland and cities, perhaps it's man himself, not the birds, who is the cause of the conflict.

After 30 years working in a bank, Monsieur Verdoux is sacked during a depression. To support his wife and child, he becomes a modern Bluebeard, marrying rich women all over the country and disposing of them as soon as he has acquired their property. As the French stock market goes down, Monsieur Ver doux has to increase his matrimonial rate, until finally he arouses police suspicions.
