A story of Flanders in eight parts by Gerard Walschap

Thijs Glorieus has been called up for military service in the Belgium of between the wars. He is assigned to a friendly Captain in the Army from his own country district. While his relations with the Captain grow into the friendship of an eager pupil and a philosophical master, his sense of justice and fair play bring him into open conflict with the Captain's family. His progress through life and of reaching equality with the love of his dreams, Rosa, is taking longer than expected.
