The Magnificent Adventure
Narrated by Cliff Michelmore
The Whitbread Round-the-World Race provided the ultimate challenge to the 177 men and women who made up the crews of the 17 yachts which sailed from Portsmouth last September.
It was the longest and toughest ocean race ever attempted - a journey of 27,000 miles and seven months at sea. Yachts capsized, masts were lost over the side and three men died when they were washed overboard by the fury of the southern oceans. Film cameras accompanied the competitors around Cape Horn and back by way of Cape Town, Sydney and Rio de Janeiro.

The musicians' livelihood depended on taking freelance engagements and to avoid losing this lucrative source of income they formed themselves into a self-governing orchestra.
The music extracts include: Beethoven Symphony No 7 Berlioz Corsair Overture Hoist The Planets
Shostakovich Symphony No 8
Vaughan Williams Symphony No 5 Walton Portsmouth Point
Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with soloist Kyung-Wha Chung
Filmed in London's Royal Festival Hall and in Salzburg during the festival.

Things have come to a pretty pass. The hot spot of the war has shifted so no casualties are coming in to the 4077th. No supplies either.
