It was Fellini's lifelong love of the circus which inspired him to try and preserve the dying art of the auguste and the white-faced clown on film. However, the result is not a straightforward documentary but a celebration of the tradition and art of clowning which culminates in a spectacular finale featuring nearly all Europe's living clowns.
