Bridges: When it Comes to the Crunch
How safe are bridges? Public confidence in bridge engineers sagged with the failure of four of the latest steel box girder constructions in 1970. No fewer than 60 British bridges had to be strengthened.
The history of bridge design is littered with the wrecks of bridges where the engineer went beyond the knowledge of his time.
But many of the failures might have been avoided if more research had been done. This programme tells a story of missed opportunities and reveals new, disquieting evidence of a problem which may attack a whole generation of our finest bridges. A problem which has not so far been made public.
