The Communist takeover in 1949 led not only to a great urge to modernise but also to a renewed interest in China's past. As a result a dazzling display of Chinese art has been unearthed and some of the most exciting discoveries are about to go on show in London.

To put the exhibition in the context of China past and present, Professor William Watson of London University and Magnus Magnusson journeyed across the vast sub-continent, the first time a foreign film crew had been allowed to get so close to everyday life and to many of the sites where the treasures were discovered.

In this first of two films Watson and Magnusson look at modern China and sketch in its early history
