The first of a two-programme investigation in which Horizon and Man Alive have combined forces.

The words 'the drug problem' conjure up frightening pictures of junkies, the needle, and death. It is frightening because what many of us don't understand becomes exaggerated in importance in our minds. And yet for something that stirs emotions as much as drugs, understanding and knowledge are the only sound basis for opinion.

This programme takes a long cool look at the medical facts around abused drugs. It looks at what we know - and what we don't know - about each of the five groups of abused drugs. It shows how the knowledge the research scientist gains from laboratory experiments matches the experience of the human drug abuser. And it shows as well how the illegal drug problem grows out of legal drug abuse: how 'the drug problem' has its roots amongst all of us.
On Wednesday Man Alive investigates the social consequence of drugs.
