Pongo Plays started life as Kyogen, or Japanese fairy tales. Henry Livings, one of the most vigorous of English playwrights, has adapted them into short comic burlesques in Victorian costume. Like the pantomime, they are full of familiar stage types and present an unusual mixture of folk charm, humour, and satire.
