Despite Dohnanyi's selfless dedication to the musical welfare of his country, events conspired against him. He ill-advisedly made a decision which was to give his enemies the ammunition they needed to vilify his name, and as a result he was accused of Nazi sympathies and branded a war criminal. Today Donald Macleod introduces the work Dohnanyi wrote in the midst of this nightmarish turmoil - his second symphony.

Artists In Focus: Brodsky Quartet
"I can't be bothered to think about people who have some vision of me as a pop singer or a rock 'n' roll singer and that this should prohibit me from entering into collaboration with so-called serious musicians. I'm a serious musician. I don't have the technique that these people do, but I'm completely serious about what I'm doing." That was Elvis Costello in 1993 shortly after the release of The Juliet Letters, a record in which he and the Brodsky Quartet simply astonished the musical world. Last month the Brodskys and Elvis Costello came into the BBC's
Maida Vale studios to record three songs, and today Petroc Trelawny is joined by Ian Belton, second violinist of the quartet, to discuss the history of this ground-breaking collaboration.

Paris Season
In a specially recorded edition of the programme at the Royal Academyto mark the opening of the exhibition Paris: Capital of the Arts 1900-1968, Richard Coles discusses the ways in which Paris has become a place of self-perpetuating myth and explores aspects of the city that are so often ignored by the romanticised image of the city evident in films, literature and photography. He also asks whether Paris deserves its reputation as capital of the arts right up to 1968.
