Gil Evans. A profile of the celebrated composer and arranger Gil Evans , best known forhis pioneering work with trumpeter Miles Davis. In 1987, less than a year before he died, Evans celebrated his 75th birthday by giving a concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. The orchestra included saxophonists Steve Lacy and John Surman , trumpeters Lew SoloffandPalleMikkelborgand percussionist AirtoMoreira. Julian Joseph presents highlights from this concert and excerpts from an interview recorded in 1978 in which Evans talks about his early days as an arranger and his first exposure to bebop in New York City after the war. A gala concert celebrating the 70th birthday of composer Stephen Sondheim , devised by Julia McKenzie and featuring songs from some of his best-loved shows, including A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd , Follies, Sunday in the Park with George, Assassins and Into the Woods. Starring Kim Criswell , Samantha Shaw ,
George Dvorsky , Henry Goodman and James Graeme , with a special guest appearance by George Shearing. The BBC Singers and Concert Orchestra are conducted by Eric Stern. This concert was given earlier this year at the Peacock theatre, London, as part of the Covent Garden Festival.
