Abdullah Ibrahim Julian Joseph introduces recordings of the South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim , who was forced by apartheid to spend much of his career in exile. In conversation,
Ibrahim recalls his early association with saxophonist Kippie Moeketsi in the Jazz Epistles, his move to Zurich and his first meeting with Duke Ellington, who was to become his mentor and champion. Featuring excerpts from the BBC archive of a concert Ibrahim gave at the Royal Festival Hall in 1987 with his group Ekaya, which included Carlos Wood (alto saxophone/flute), Ricky Ford (tenor saxophone), Charles Davis (baritone saxophone), Timothy Williams (trombone), Michael Bowie (bass) and Winnard Harper (drums).
