SCHNITTKE WEEKEND

The final live concert of the Schnittke weekend from the Barbican, London.
Schnittke first read Thomas Mann 's Doktor
Faustus in the late 1940s. The story of the famous alchemist and magician who sold his soul to the Devil in return for everlasting youth appealed to Schnittke, but it was not until 1983 that he set the Faust theme to music in his Faust Cantata, which in turn became part of the final act of his opera Historia von D. Johann Fausten in 1994. The third symphony is dedicated to the German symphonic tradition and features quotations from composers as diverse as Bach and Kagel.
