Born in the same year as John Coltrane and Miles Davis , multi-instrumentalist Hal Russell played drums with both in the early 1950s before spearheading Chicago's free jazz scene with the Joe Daley Trio. Revered as a drummer and vibes player Russell took up the saxophone at the age of 50 and began playing like his hero Albert Ayler. With contributions from record producer Steve Lake and saxophonist Mars Williams. Producer Steve Shepherd
Live from the Met: II Trovatore
In one of Verdi's most bizarre and compelling dramas, Azucena's gypsy mother, accused of witchcraft by Count di
Luna, is burnt at the stake. Azucena tries to seek revenge by throwing the count's baby into the flames but accidentally throws her own baby instead. She hides her mistake by bringing up the count's baby as her son. It is only when, 20 years later, the count orders her son's death that Azucena reveals herterrible secret. And during the interval Rodney Milnes continues his series Opera Snaps - a sideways glance at each of this season's works.
