The Hal Russell Story. Linton Chiswick offers an introduction to one of contemporary jazz's hidden treasures. Born in the same year as John Coltrane and Miles Davis , multi-instrumentalist Hal Russell played drums with both in the early 1950s before spearheading Chicago's free jazz scene with the Joe Daley Trio. Revered as a drummer and vibes player Russell took up the saxophone at the age of 50 and began playing like his hero Albert Ayler.
