Petroc Trelawny introduces a concert from the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, featuring works composed during the second half of the 19th century. Stephen Hough is tonight's soloist in a performance of Rachmaninov's first piano concerto of 1891, which is preceded by the overture to the opera Verdi composed forthe Paris Opera in 1855. Brahms's lush second symphony is heard after the interval.
