Gil Evans. A profile of the celebrated composer and arranger Gil Evans , best known forhis pioneering work with trumpeter Miles Davis. In 1987, less than a year before he died, Evans celebrated his 75th birthday by giving a concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. The orchestra included saxophonists Steve Lacy and John Surman , trumpeters Lew SoloffandPalleMikkelborgand percussionist AirtoMoreira. Julian Joseph presents highlights from this concert and excerpts from an interview recorded in 1978 in which Evans talks about his early days as an arranger and his first exposure to bebop in New York City after the war.
