July sees the centenary of Ernest Hemingway 's birth and the publication of his final unfinished novel, based on his last safari in Africa. Malcolm Bradbury, David Lodge , Elaine Showalter and Bill Buford look at this complex and colourful man. Christopher Bigsby visits Hemingway's birthplace and meets his son Patrick who edited the manuscript, which had been lying in a locked vault since Hemingway's death in 1961. Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka 's new play for Radio 3 is an autobiographical account of events that took place in 1997 under the brutal regime of the former Nigerian dictator General Sani Abacha. The action begins in Nigeria and continues in London. Highlighting the plight of refugees seeking political asylum, the play focuses on Soyinka's daughter and son-in-law.
