SOUNDING THE CENTURY
Russell Davies continues his history of jazz.
27: Bebop Takes Over. Neither the name bebop, which was taken from some scat vocalise of the twenties, nor its slightly neurotic musical character was unforeseen in jazz. It was the harmonic daring introduced by the first boppers in the forties that changed the face of the music. Producer David Perry

Rossini's perennially popular comic opera The Barber of Seville, based on Beaumarchais's comic and subversive play, given a fortnight ago at the Teatro alia Scala, Milan. Composed, legend has it, in the space of 13 days, 11 Barbiere di Siviglia had a disastrous premiere - stage accidents and a critical audience primed by a rival composer. But success swiftly followed. Count Almaviva, a Spanish nobleman, is in love with Rosina. She is the ward of the elderly Dr Bartolo, who plans to marry her himself. Almaviva enlists the help of the ingenious and scheming local barber - Figaro - and as the plot progresses, it becomes more and more difficult to tell whether master or servant is calling the shots.

Novelist Colm Toibin opens a window on the world through books. Writing from other countries takes us to the heart of other cultures and shows the forces which shape other people's lives. This evening's programme explores generation gaps in Latin America, where young writers are killing their fathers; in Egypt, where the new writing can no longer explain reality; in Israel, where for the first time women are the leading lights in literature; and in Galicia, where the past is always present. Producer Dalia Ventura

Jez Nelson continues the monthly sessions of hitherto unrecorded
British jazz with the Stan Tracey Trio. Regarded as Britain's most respected jazz pianist, composer and arranger, Stan Tracey was one of the pioneers of British modern jazz in the fifties and sixties, achieving lasting acclaim for his inspired Under Milk Wood album for Columbia Records.
He has remained at the forefront of British jazz in a variety of settings, from quartet to big band. This session is unusual in that it features Tracey originals spanning the last 15 years and includes Mama Sass , a tribute to his daughter Sarah written in January 1999. The trio - his son, drummer
Clark Tracey , and bass player Andrew Cleyndert - allows Stan Tracey 's piano artistry scope and freedom, often masked in other settings. Producer Steve Shepherd
