The founding father of the famous French piano firm of Erard was born into a Swiss family in Strasbourg, but he settled in Paris. The harp was also important to his firm's success. All the solo instruments in today's programme were made by the firm of Erard at different periods.

In this concert given on Sunday in the Snape Maltings concert hall, the BBC Symphony Orchestra is conducted by the new director of the Aldeburgh Festival, Thomas Ades , who is also represented in his more familiar role as composer. One of the tributes in Per Norgard's piece for string orchestra is to Sibelius, whose complete score for Hugo von Hofmannsthal 's play
