Bangladesh emerged as an independent country in 1971 after a bloody struggle with Pakistan. It is associated with poverty, famines, cyclones and floods, but these negative images obscure a hugely rich and diverse culture. Richard Coles visits Dhaka, one of the world's most polluted and sprawling cities, as well as the tea-growing region of the north and the tribal hill tracts of the south, meeting writers, singers, poets and academics to discuss the role of culture in a struggling young country.
