This year marks Andrew Davis 's tenth appearance as music director of the BBC Proms. In advance of tonight's opening concert of the 1999 season he talks to Joan
Bakewell about this unique musical institution, recalling some of his most memorable Prom performances, revealing his feelings about the last night, and discussing the role of the Proms in the promotion of new music. Music includes Parry, Hoist, Tippett and Hugh Wood.

Early Music Network International Young Artists' Competition has become one of the world's major prizes for early music. Past winners include Paul Goodwin , I Fagiolini and the Palladian Ensemble. The first night of the 105th season is also the climax of Radio 3's groundbreaking project Sounding the Century. Tippett's original and visionary oratorio The Mask of Time was partly inspired by the famous television series The Ascent of Man, which provides a major theme for this last Proms series of the century.
