Donald Macleod looks at some of the great diarists of the musical world. 2: Samuel Pepys. Pepys kept his diary during the early years of the Restoration. He wrote it in shorthand to keep it secret from prying eyes.
What he left is not so much a record of events - such as the Plague and the Great Fire of London - as a re-creation of them. It is one of the most vivid accounts of any historical period, made all the more engaging because Pepys himself was no saint. Including excerpts from: Locke Suite in G minor

In 1712. Handel visited London for the second time, hoping to repeat the success he had already enjoyed with his opera Rinaldo. It was not long before his Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne was rewarded with a pension for life from the monarch and his Water Music was rapturously received on the River Thames. Chris de Souza examines this period in Handel's career, with excerpts from the Water Music, Julius Caesar , the Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne and the anthem As Pants the Hart.

Five programmes exploring some of the century's greatest houses and the contribution they have made to how we think about our homes. The second programme visits the USA to see Frank Lloyd Wright 's famous house Fallingwater. Driven by his belief in organic design, and inspired by his desire to create an American architecture, Wright produced a house of the most startling design.
The informality of the open plan, and the exposed building materials, have indeed provided a blueprint for much American domestic architecture.
