Beginning a new interval series in which leading writers consider the relationship between religion and language. Barrister and Rumpole of the Bailey creator John Mortimer unsuccessfully defended Gay News against a charge of blasphemy in 1977. An atheist himself, he asks whether writers are not more in need of legal protection from religion than the other way round.
