Instrumental Revolutionaries
Richard Baker profiles performers who revolutionised attitudes to their chosen instrument. The Goossens dynasty of musicians exerted a profound influence on British musical life for almost a century. Leon was steered toward the oboe by his conductor father, and became the leading player of his generation. His tone was universally admired, as was his stylistic flexibility - he was equally at home with Strauss and Vaughan Williams, Bach and Mozart. Including music by Handel and Gerald Finzi and a complete performance of Mozart's Oboe Concerto in C, K314.

With Piers Lane.
Contests and Collaborations
In the middle of the last century, Europe spawned some of the greatest virtuoso pianist composers, including Franz Liszt and Sigismund Thalberg. As Piers Lane explains, there was great rivalry between these two, but in one of the most extraordinary piano pieces of the time - Hexameron - Liszt, Thalberg and four others combined their talents to produce a set of dazzling variations on a theme by Bellini. Hexameron is performed by Piers Lane , Hamish Milne and Seta Tanyel. Producer Chris Wines
