The Piano

on BBC Radio 3

With Piers Lane.
Contests and Collaborations
In the middle of the last century, Europe spawned some of the greatest virtuoso pianist composers, including Franz Liszt and Sigismund Thalberg. As Piers Lane explains, there was great rivalry between these two, but in one of the most extraordinary piano pieces of the time - Hexameron - Liszt, Thalberg and four others combined their talents to produce a set of dazzling variations on a theme by Bellini. Hexameron is performed by Piers Lane , Hamish Milne and Seta Tanyel. Producer Chris Wines
